Restore the Maioho Family to Stewardship at Mauna Ala

Restore the Maioho Family to Stewardship at Mauna Ala
The Issue
Imagine being the keeper of a sacred tradition, a lineage that dates back over two centuries, where respect, duty, and history intertwine. I am honored to be the current Kahu, or 'Keeper of the Bones,' selected by my family to protect and care for the sacred Iwi Ali’i at Mauna Ala, the Royal Mausoleum State Monument in Hawaii. For 206 years, my family held this revered duty, fulfilling a promise made to King Kamehameha I to safeguard the resting places of our revered Chiefs.
Unfortunately, despite this enduring commitment, our family has been unjustly removed from our role as stewards and residents of this sacred site. This eviction was not only undeserved but has severed the very bond that our ancestors have upheld with dignity and pride, leaving a cultural void where a living part of history should reside.
Mauna Ala is more than a historic monument; it is a living testament to the heritage and sacrifices of Hawaii’s royal lineage. The absence of the Maioho family disrupts the spiritual and cultural guardianship we have provided and erodes the respect and sanctity that Mauna Ala embodies. Our presence is vital in maintaining the traditions and rites that honor and protect the Iwi Ali’i.
I implore the people of Hawaii and those who revere the cultural histories and royal legacies of the islands: Help restore the Maioho family to our rightful place as custodians at Mauna Ala. We seek not only to honor our ancestors but to ensure that the cultural stewardship and historical knowledge remain alive and vibrant for future generations.
Together, we can ensure that Mauna Ala continues to be cared for by those who have both the heritage and the heart to honor its sanctity. Support the restitution of our family to the Royal Mausoleum and help preserve Hawaii’s sacred legacy.
Stand with us in keeping the promise to King Kamehameha I alive. Please sign this petition to make our voices heard and restore the rightful stewardship of the Maioho family at Mauna Ala.
