The Issue

The Garfield High School track is a prominent gathering place for teens and families in our community and beyond. However, it does not offer nearly as green and calm of an environment as a major neighborhood greenway should.

Our tentative proposal is to repurpose 8-10 existing parking spots, then use that and other underused space surrounding the track to plant large shade trees. A well-maintained tree canopy is essential not only for shading and noise reduction but also for the benefit of mental health, providing a peaceful oasis in the heart of the Central District.

By signing this petition, you are adding your support as a neighbor, endorsing a proposal to repurpose a modest number of parking spaces around the Garfield track on Alder (between 24th and 25th) and 25th (between Alder and Jefferson) for SDOT to improve an area fallen into disrepair. We ask not just for support from neighbors on the immediately affected streets but also the surrounding area to affirm trees are more important than a small reduction in parking. Let's bring back the trees, for the well-being of current and future generations. Sign this petition today.
