Restore the constitutional right to an abortion!

Restore the constitutional right to an abortion!
The Issue
The overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision in 2022 was a devastating blow to reproductive rights and bodily autonomy for millions of American women. This ruling stripped away a fundamental constitutional right that had been in place for nearly 50 years, leaving many women without access to safe, legal abortion care.
The impacts of Dobbs have been far-reaching and deeply harmful. In states that have banned or severely restricted abortion, women facing unintended pregnancies or pregnancy complications now face impossible choices - travel long distances at great expense to obtain care, attempt dangerous self-managed abortions, or be forced to carry pregnancies to term against their will. This is especially burdensome for low-income women, women of color, and rural women who often lack the resources to travel out of state.
Denying women control over their own bodies and reproductive decisions is fundamentally inhumane. It treats women as second-class citizens incapable of making their own healthcare choices. The Dobbs ruling has put women's health and lives at risk by delaying or denying care for pregnancy complications and miscarriages. It has also criminalized doctors who are now afraid to provide necessary reproductive healthcare.
Additionally, the Dobbs decision has been criticized by many legal scholars as a departure from established precedent. Its reasoning rejected nearly 50 years of jurisprudence on privacy rights. The ruling aligns closely with particular political and religious viewpoints on abortion, raising questions about its impartiality. Additionally, the decision's immediate and dramatic impact on access to reproductive healthcare across much of the country has led some to argue that it prioritized a specific ideological stance over consideration of broader societal consequences.
The Dobbs decision must be overruled as soon as possible to protect women's rights, health, and autonomy. Congress should pass federal legislation codifying abortion rights, and a future Supreme Court case must restore the constitutional right to abortion. Until then, millions of American women will continue to suffer under this cruel and unjust ruling. We demand action to correct this grave injustice and restore reproductive freedom across the United States.
