Restore the Art & Craft on the Coast Markets
The issue
To Gold Coast City Council,
We, the current stallholders of the Art and Craft on the Coast Markets, submit this petition with a united voice to address recent changes that have impacted our livelihoods and the cultural heritage of our community. We respectfully request the reinstatement (or guarantee of after the current works) of the Burleigh Market on the last Sunday of each month, or alternatively, the addition of the Coolangatta Market on the fourth Sunday (of every Month). Furthermore, we urge the restoration of Kurrawa Park as the permanent location for the Broadbeach Market.
The decision to change the permit structure for the Arts & Craft Market was made without consultation with the stallholders, many of whom depend on these markets as their primary source of income. The absence of a fourth market each month poses a significant threat of financial hardship for us. The Art and Craft on the Coast Markets are not just commercial ventures; they represent over four decades of community engagement and local entrepreneurship. These markets have served as a vibrant platform for artisans to present Australian-made products, fresh produce, and unique crafts, fostering a cultural staple with a lively atmosphere and diverse offerings being alive township locations across the GC.
These markets also a provide a major source of tourism and income to the Gold Coast on all weekends. Visitors who plan their holidays around these iconic Gold Coast markets could leave bitterly disappointed on not finding or even having a market on during their stay. These markets are integral to the local economy and the cultural identity of the Gold Coast.
Every Sunday, the beachfronts of Broadbeach, Coolangatta, Burleigh Heads and recently Paradise Point come alive, transforming into bustling hubs of creativity and commerce. With 100 to 150 stalls, the markets offer a plethora of ingenious creations, delectable food, and live entertainment, attracting both residents and tourists.
In light of these considerations and as there were no applications for the recently closed tender. We request immediate consultation with the current permit holder for the continuation all markets. This action would not only support the stallholders, residents and tourist but also preserve the cherished tradition of the Art and Craft on the Coast Markets.
