Restore Street Parking on Trombley Street for Residential Safety and Convenience
The Issue
My name Trey, and live in the towns neighbourhood in Regina, and like many others, I rent out a basement suite in my home. Our tenants, as well as many others residing in basement suites on Trombley Street, experience an everyday struggle of parking—a struggle causing unnecessary discomfort and distress, particularly during harsh Saskatchewan winters.
Due to recent changes, street parking on Trombley Street has been severely limited. This decision seems to overlook the fact that there are numerous basement suites on our block, each occupied by people who need safe and suitable parking options. With the imposed parking restrictions, these residents often find themselves having to park far from their homes, or risk facing the risk of receiving a ticket.
The parking restrictions not only cause inconveniences but also pose significant safety issues. According to Safe Cities Report (2016), close parking to residences ranks amongst basic safety measures in residential communities. With Saskatchewan’s winter conditions, which are notably some of the harshest in Canada (Canadian Geographic, 2019), this issue is only exacerbated. Forcing residents of the neighborhood to navigate snowy and icy paths late at night due to these parking restrictions isn't just inconvenient—it's dangerous. Especially when street parking could accommodate cars to be plugged in closer to their residence
This reality presents an issue for property owners too. As homeowners, we make an effort to provide a safe and comfortable environment for our tenants. However, the imposed restrictions complicate these efforts and potentially make our properties less appealing.
We call upon the authorities in Regina, SK, to consider this plea from its own residents—owners and tenants alike. We urge you to rethink the parking restrictions on Trombley Street, compensate for the high number of basement suite residents, and ultimately bring back street parking for the safety and convenience of these individuals.
