Restore Snack Time to Our Fourth Period with Ms. Love
The Issue
I, along with every other student in our fourth period class, have been subject to an unwelcome change: the removal of our snack time. We understand the value of routine and the importance of maintaining a disciplined environment, but we believe this action by Ms. Love, a long-term substitute, is unwarranted.
Research has consistently demonstrated that students perform better when they have ample opportunities to recharge throughout the day. According to a study by the American Society for Nutrition, school children who have regular snack times demonstrate increased attention, memory and overall academic performance.
Our school permits students to eat during one period, and that period is our fourth period class. We, the students, rely on this snack break to refuel and better absorb the learning in class. This small allowance can determine how we participate and succeed in classroom activities for the rest of the day.
It's personal to us to have our food. Food is a fundamental need, but it also provides a comfort during the day. Take a moment to remember how a simple snack can brighten your day and imagine having that small pleasure taken away.
