The Issue

This issue is personal to me because it directly impacts the future of the next generation. We have an opportunity to create stronger career pathways for the students coming behind us. By bringing trades back into high schools, we can help preserve and grow blue-collar careers while also strengthening our economy. Expanding access to skilled trade education will open doors to stable, well-paying jobs and ensure that future generations have real opportunities to succeed.

In recent years, there has been a significant decline in the availability of skilled trades programs in high schools across Florida. As a result, many students graduate without the practical skills needed to enter high-demand fields like carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and more. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, many skilled trades are projected to grow faster than average, yet the gap between demand and supply continues to widen.

Restoring skilled trades programs is not just beneficial for students, but it's also crucial for our state’s economy. Skilled trades workers are essential to maintaining and developing infrastructure, which is the backbone of Florida’s growth. Without young, trained individuals entering these professions, we face a future where basic services could become scarce and more expensive.

Furthermore, encouraging youth to pursue careers in trades can reduce the burden of student debt, as these programs provide viable employment opportunities without the need for a costly four-year degree. Apprenticeships and hands-on learning offer immediate entry into the workforce, making education more accessible to all.

The Florida Department of Education must act now to reinstate and expand skilled trades programs in all high schools. By doing so, we not only equip students with the necessary tools to succeed but also build a robust foundation for Florida's economic future.

We urge state officials to allocate resources, create partnerships with local businesses and trade schools, and incorporate modern technology into these programs to make them competitive and engaging for today’s youth.

Please sign this petition to urge the Florida Department of Education to take immediate and decisive action to restore skilled trades programs to all high schools across Florida. Let's give our next generation the opportunity to thrive in valuable, rewarding careers.
