Restore Safety and Cleanliness to George Washington Park

Restore Safety and Cleanliness to George Washington Park
The Issue
Living by George Washington Park and the local USPS office in Centralia, WA, I have firsthand experienced the transformation of one of our community's cherished spaces into a challenging environment. Over the past months, the park has seen an increase in homeless encampments and vagrancy, impacting its safety, cleanliness, and overall utility for local residents and visitors. While everyone deserves compassion and dignity, it's crucial to address these issues sustainably and respectfully, ensuring our park remains accessible and enjoyable for all.
George Washington Park was once a hub of community gatherings, children’s laughter, and leisure activities. Now, due to the growing presence of encampments, many families and individuals feel unsafe visiting. The situation has also led to a visible decline in the park's upkeep, with littering and damage becoming more prevalent.
According to the Homeless Management Information System, Washington State has witnessed a 10% increase in homelessness since the onset of the pandemic. Centralia has seen its share, and it's important to tackle this crisis without marginalizing vulnerable populations further.
Proposed solutions include increasing support for local shelters and social services to provide adequate temporary and permanent housing. Additionally, implementing regular clean-up initiatives and community involvement can help restore the park's former glory.
We urge local government and the community leaders to collaborate in creating effective strategies that reflect our town's values of safety, inclusivity, and care for public spaces. By supporting this petition, you are advocating for a balanced approach to reclaim our park as a place for everyone.
Sign this petition to work towards a safer and cleaner George Washington Park in Centralia, WA—a park that everyone in the community can enjoy once again.
