Restore rights to felons after 10 crime-free years
The Issue
When my husband was just 18, he made a mistake that would impact the rest of his life. He committed a felony, served his time, and has since led a law-abiding life for over 17 years. Despite proving that he has changed, he still finds himself stripped of fundamental rights that many of us take for granted. This is not just his story; it is the reality for countless individuals across the United States who continue to face life-long consequences despite years of rehabilitation and good behavior.
In the United States, there are approximately 19 million people with felony convictions, according to a 2018 report by the Sentencing Project. Many of them, like my husband, have served their sentences and reintegrated into society, yet they continue to face civil disenfranchisement. This includes losing their voting rights, the right to serve on a jury, owning a firearm and even difficulties in securing stable employment or housing.
It’s time we adopted a more humane approach that acknowledges personal growth and change. I propose a system whereby individuals with felony convictions can petition to have their full rights restored after living crime-free for 10 years. This change in policy would not only serve as an incentive for rehabilitation but also as a recognition that people do have the capacity to change.
A similar path has been seen in some states already; for example, Florida passed Amendment 4 in 2018 that allows people with felony convictions to regain their voting rights upon the completion of their sentence, parole, and probation. While this is a positive step, it still leaves out the broader aspect of civil rights restoration.
Let's urge our lawmakers to consider this logical and compassionate solution: acknowledging and restoring the rights of individuals who have demonstrated their commitment to change, like my husband. Reintegrating these individuals fully into society will not only uphold the principles of fairness and equality but also strengthen our communities as a whole.
Please sign this petition to support a more just and rehabilitative legal system for felons who have shown positive transformation and adhered to the law for over a decade without re-offending. Your signature could be a vital step towards giving countless people a genuine second chance.
