Restore open seating for lunch
The Issue
When lunch time arrives at school, it should be a moment where students can relax, recharge, and enjoy a break from their busy academic schedules. However, the current restrictions on seating during lunch have taken away this cherished time for many students, and they have become a source of frustration and stress.
In our school, one of the reasons cited for restricting open seating during lunch was concerns about behavior and dismissal procedures. However, many of us believe that students' behavior at lunch was never as problematic as it has been made out to be. In fact, the manner in which students conducted themselves during lunch was normal and, by most standards, quite acceptable.
Open seating during lunch allows students to comfortably sit with friends, engage in meaningful conversations, and perhaps even make new connections. It fosters a sense of community and belonging, key components of a positive school environment. By being able to choose where to sit, students feel a heightened sense of autonomy and control over their personal time in school, which can lead to decreased stress and increased satisfaction.
Moreover, from a developmental standpoint, lunch is an opportunity for students to learn important social skills that are incredibly valuable beyond the classroom. With enforced seating, the natural socializing process is stifled. Instead of enforcing a rigid system that hampers students' ability to socialize with peers of their choosing, let's encourage a more trust-centric approach where students are given the freedom to demonstrate positive social behavior.
As a community that values respect, responsibility, and mutual trust, it's important to revisit and revamp policies that may be doing more harm than good. Our goal is simple yet profound: restore open seating during lunch so students can savor this time and make it their own in a meaningful way.
