The Issue

I used to love going and driving through the intersection at North Old Carriage Road and Sunset Avenue in Rocky Mount, NC. However, with all the road work, roundabouts, and now a no left turn policy from any direction, I find myself planning my trips to avoid the area.

This intersection was a vital part of the community, providing easy access to local spots such as Sheetz and Hardee’s. Now with its current configuration, it has become a source of frustration and inconvenience, impacting daily commutes and local businesses.

The introduction of roundabouts and restriction of left turns was intended to improve traffic flow, but many residents, including myself, feel it has done more harm than good. Navigating these changes is confusing and time-consuming, deterring residents and visitors alike from frequenting the area.

Research from similar road configurations elsewhere suggests that not all traffic improvements are effective in smaller, local settings. According to the Federal Highway Administration, while roundabouts can reduce collision points, they require significant adjustment from drivers and can boost bypass rates for businesses located near major intersections.

We urge the local government and the Department of Transportation to reassess the current road setup and listen to the voice of the community. By returning the intersection to its former traffic pattern, we can restore the convenience and ease of access that residents once enjoyed.

Petitions can lead to change. Sign this petition to help bring back the old intersection design at North Old Carriage Road and Sunset Avenue and revoke the no left turn policy. Let's make Rocky Mount traffic-friendly again.
