Restore Mount Wilson: A Natural Treasure for All

The Issue

For years, residents of foothill communities in central Los Angeles County have turned their eyes upward to Mount Wilson. With lush slopes hosting a variety of native wildlife, the mountain has been a source of natural beauty for all to see. After January 2025, however, greenery that once covered the mountain fell victim to dangerous and fast-moving wildfires. Once a picturesque landscape, the mountain is now barren. This poses an environmental concern in terms of potential mudslides resulting from erosion of the soil as well as complete eradication of the mountain's ecosystem.

The purpose of this petition is to call for the City Council of Sierra Madre, as well as the US Forest Service (a branch of the USDA), to organize a reseeding and replanting campaign for Mount Wilson.

Barren and deforested landscapes heighten the risk of runoff and mudslides when rain falls. This scenario leaves Sierra Madre and other foothill communities, such as northern Arcadia and northern Pasadena, at high risk for these threats. Furthermore, Mount Wilson's barren state means the complete loss of an entire ecosystem in the heart of Los Angeles County. Wildlife depends on vegetation and greenery not only to survive, but to thrive. Without it, a healthy ecosystem cannot develop.

Restoring diverse vegetation and groundcover not only returns Mount Wilson to its previous scenic charm but would also play a vital role in grounding soil. As a result, the risk of mudslides would be mitigated, thereby improving Mount Wilson's ecosystem and encouraging the renewal of the mountain's natural environment.

Examples of restoration in the past include the reseeding and replanting of Griffith Park following the Griffith Park brush fire of 2007. By following this precedent, we can not only restore Mount Wilson - but we can restore the beauty of Sierra Madre, as well.

This plea is more than just an environmental concern, rather, it is a vital step towards a safer and healthier future for the city of Sierra Madre and hence, Los Angeles County as a whole. For through the restoration of Mount Wilson, we not only beautify our city - we protect the natural environment for generations to come.
