The Issue

Imagine being a child, alone and afraid, standing in a courtroom in a foreign country. You do not speak the language, and yet you must face trained government prosecutors actively seeking your deportation. This is not a dystopian nightmare; this is the reality for many unaccompanied minors navigating the U.S. immigration system without legal representation. This issue hits close to home, knowing that small children who cannot even articulate their fears or understand the complexities of immigration law are expected to defend themselves against powerful forces that seek their removal.

Currently, unaccompanied migrant children—many of whom are toddlers or infants—are forced to appear in court without the aid of an attorney. This violates basic human rights and due process. Recent studies highlight this injustice, revealing that over 95% of children with legal representation attend their court hearings, ensuring a fair and orderly process. Yet, due to funding cuts, many are deprived of the legal support they desperately need.

We urge the Department of Health and Human Services and the Executive Office for Immigration Review to immediately restore federal funding for the legal representation of these vulnerable minors. Evidence shows that children are significantly more likely to remain in the country if they have legal representation, not because of leniency, but because they can adequately present their case and circumstances within the lawful framework.

Restoring funding not only aligns with the foundational principles of justice and fairness but also reflects our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable among us from legal exploitation. Moreover, it upholds America's image as a beacon of hope and refuge, a defender of human rights and dignity, especially for innocent children whose only "crime" is fleeing conflict, persecution, or hardship.

We stand with organizations like the Immigrant Defenders Law Center, the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, and dedicated legal advocates nationwide.

We demand that the U.S. government immediately reinstate funding for the Acacia Center for Justice network and guarantee that no children ever have to face an immigration courtroom alone.

By signing this petition, you are calling for an actionable and urgent change: one that ensures all children have the right to a fair trial and a voice to tell their stories. Let's stand together to protect their futures. Please sign this petition to demand justice and humane treatment for unaccompanied minors in immigration courts. Thank you for your support.
