The Issue

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reviewed its own records on 33 people who died in immigration detention between 2019 and early 2026. In 27 of the 31 cases where reviewers reached a conclusion, they found medical care fell outside safe limits. In late September, those reviews showed up on ICE's public records website. About four days later, they appear to have been taken down.

The public has a right to see these findings. Taxpayers pay for these facilities, and families deserve to know how their loved ones died. The reviews should go back online, permanently, and future reviews should be published as they are finished.

The reports describe the same problems showing up again and again, across different facilities and different presidential administrations. Sick calls went unanswered or got handled over the phone. Medications were stopped. In some emergencies, staff did not perform CPR, or did it wrong.

Marie Ange Blaise, a 44-year-old Haitian woman, collapsed at Broward Transitional Center, a privately run facility in Pompano Beach, Florida, in April 2025. ICE's internal review found staff never started CPR even though she had no pulse. That is the opposite of what the agency's public report on her death claimed. At the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in California, Ismael Ayala-Uribe died of septic shock from an abscess that staff never visually checked. When guards asked medical staff to look in on him the day before he died, the review shows it took more than 13 hours for them to respond.

Wherever someone stands on immigration, no person in government custody should be left without CPR when their heart stops. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin and ICE leadership must restore the deleted reports and require every detention facility to keep staff trained in emergency life support on site at all times, with same-day access to a medical provider for anyone who reports being sick.

Sign the petition to bring these reports back into public view and make basic emergency care the rule, before another preventable death happens behind closed doors.
