Dear supporters,
Thank you for standing up for parrots and humane airline policies. Over just the last few days — especially after BirdTricks generously shared a video and email about this campaign — this petition crossed 1,000 signatures.
That milestone sends a clear message: Many people recognize that it is irrational and unjust to ban parrots from safe in-cabin air travel while dogs and cats are routinely allowed.
This campaign is focused, first and foremost, on Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines, because Hawaiian’s policy causes particularly severe harm to island communities. When household companion birds are prohibited from flying in the cabin with their families to larger urban islands, they can be cut off from essential veterinary care, sanctuary placement, or adoption opportunities that simply do not exist locally. For birds living in outlying island communities which lack access to advanced veterinary care, this policy is not theoretical — it can have real, sometimes devastating consequences.
What makes this even more concerning is that this approach is now spreading beyond Hawaiian and Alaska to other U.S. carriers, despite the absence of any evidence that parrots pose greater safety, health, or disruption risks than dogs or cats. Blanket species-bans are not reasoned policy — they are arbitrary exclusions.
If airlines believe these bans are justified, they should be able to explain why:
- Dogs and cats, which can trigger allergies and cause noise or disruption, are permitted — while birds are barred outright
- Individual behavior is evaluated for human passengers, yet birds are excluded without any opportunity to demonstrate that they can travel quietly and safely in approved carriers
This petition asks airlines to replace blanket bans with humane, behavior-based rules — the same standard already applied to other animals and to humans themselves.
If you’d like to help keep this momentum going, the most effective actions you can take are:
- Share this petition with bird owners, avian veterinarians, rescues, and bird clubs, and encourage them to pass it along
- Leave a short comment explaining why access to safe in-cabin travel matters for birds in your life
A heartfelt thank-you to Jamie and Dave at BirdTricks for amplifying this issue, and to every one of you who has lent your voice to this cause.
With gratitude,
David Deutsch
