International students at UNC Chapel Hill are facing an unprecedented challenge that threatens their financial stability and their freedom to choose suitable health coverage. A new policy, effective from Spring 2026, mandates that all international students enroll in a University-mandated health insurance plan, eliminating the option to use equivalent third-party coverage. This policy threatens the wellbeing of thousands of students who contribute significantly to the university’s diversity and cultural richness.

Many international students have relied on third-party insurance plans that provide better benefits at lower costs, tailored to their specific needs. The new policy not only imposes an additional financial burden but also disregards the diverse backgrounds and unique situations of international students. Some may have preexisting conditions that are better covered under their current plans, while others simply cannot afford the University-mandated plan.

This one-size-fits-all approach undermines the principles of fairness and transparency that UNC Chapel Hill stands for. Moreover, the lack of communication and inclusion of international student voices in this decision-making process is deeply concerning. The University, a place of learning and progress, should stand as a beacon of equality and inclusion, honoring its commitment to all who call Carolina home.

We urge UNC Chapel Hill's administration to reconsider and revoke this policy. We demand that international students be given back their right to choose insurance plans that suit their individual needs. Furthermore, we ask that the University's administration include international student representatives in future decisions that directly affect them, ensuring that policies reflect the diverse and equitable values of the community.
