Restore Funding to Public Education in Texas
In 2011, Republicans in the Texas State Legislature cut public education by $5.4 billion dollars. The consequences of bad politics over good policy have been clear. Our public schools have been left with 25,000 fewer educators, including 10,700 fewer teachers. At the same time, in the first year of the Republican budget, we had 65,000 new students. With fewer teachers and more students, K-4 classroom size waivers peaked to 8,243, 3.5 times higher than the previous year. We can fix this and the time to act is now. A Texas judge has recently ruled that the state’s school finance system is unconstitutional. Texas has the means to start helping our schools. While Republicans have remained idle, Democrats have led the effort to restore education cuts and provide a 21st century education for our children. There are $2 billion dollars available to spend in the current budget, $5.5 billion dollars available in the next budget cycle, and $11.8 billion in our state Rainy Day Fund available to invest in our future.
