The Issue

The New Bern Board of Aldermen's recent decision to ban fishing and crabbing from the northernmost point of Council Bluff Green along the Neuse River to its confluence with the Trent River to the intersection with the North Carolina railroad at Hancock Street has left many community members frustrated and disheartened. This ban prohibits traditional activities in an area that has significant historical and cultural importance to New Bern's residents.

Public lands, particularly those adjoining our beautiful waterways, have long served as a medium for community recreation and bonding. Allowing activities such as fishing and crabbing is not merely a leisure pursuit, but a way for residents to connect with nature, teach sustainability to children, and support local traditions that have been passed down through generations. The ability to fish and crab is an integral part of our community's heritage and provides food, entertainment, and a means of promoting mental well-being among our citizens.

Statistics from regions with active waterfronts show that municipalities benefit economically from increased tourism and local engagement when waterfronts remain accessible for a variety of activities. The exclusion of fishing and crabbing undermines the opportunity to welcome enthusiasts who contribute to the local economy through related purchases such as bait, tackle, dining, and stays.

By signing this petition, you're advocating to keep our waterfront accessible for future generations. I Urge the New Bern Board of Aldermen to reconsider their decision and restore the rights of our citizens to fish and crab responsibly in our cherished waterfront. Sign this petition and help us protect local traditions and foster responsible enjoyment of our natural resources.
