Restore emergency services at Grantham Hospital
The Issue
I recently experienced a medical emergency when I was suffering from severe abdominal pain caused by appendicitis. It was distressing enough to endure the pain, but what made the ordeal far worse was that Grantham Hospital was unable to provide the necessary emergency services. After an initial examination, I was sent home, followed the advise from them stay at home 24h in bed and return the next day in agony. Even then, the hospital was unable to conduct a CT scan on-site, and I was forced to arrange transportation to Lincoln Hospital, over 30 miles away, to receive the urgent care I needed.
Grantham Hospital is a vital healthcare facility for the community, but without fully functioning emergency services, it falls short of its responsibility to provide critical care in dire situations. Instead, it operates akin to an urgent treatment centre (UTC), which is inadequate for a community that relies on it as a primary healthcare provider.
The current system fails to address emergencies swiftly, putting lives at risk. Imagine being in severe pain or experiencing a life-threatening condition with the nearest adequate emergency care nearly an hour away by car. This situation is untenable and requires immediate attention.
Statistics show that prompt medical intervention in emergencies can significantly improve outcomes. According to the UK's Department of Health, timely access to emergency care is crucial in reducing mortality and improving recovery rates. The distance to Lincoln Hospital, coupled with transportation delays, can be the difference between life and death.
We, the residents of Grantham and surrounding areas, deserve better. Our hospital should be equipped with a fully operational A&E department, staffed with experienced medical professionals who can provide the necessary emergency services on-site. Reinstating full A&E services at Grantham Hospital will improve healthcare access for the community and ensures that no one has to endure unnecessary suffering or risk due to inadequate local healthcare facilities.
We call upon the NHS Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board and relevant authorities to take immediate action to reinstate full emergency services at Grantham Hospital. By doing so, we will ensure better care, quicker responses, and potentially save lives.
Please sign this petition and help us restore the healthcare services this community desperately needs.
