The Issue

We, the parents, guardians, and community members of Toronto Catholic District School Board schools, formally express our deep concern regarding recent system-wide decisions that have been made without consultation with key stakeholders, including parents, school staff, and Catholic School Parent Councils (CSPC's).

Within a 24-hour period, families were informed of multiple significant changes, including:

  • Elimination of International Language Programs (e.g., Italian, Portuguese)
  • Removal of critical literacy supports such as the Fifth Block reading program
  • Changes to school bell times impacting daily family routines
  • These decisions directly affect student learning, well-being, family logistics, childcare arrangements, and staff working conditions.

While the Board has cited operational and financial considerations, these changes were implemented without transparency, engagement, or community input, contradicting the fundamental role of parent councils and stakeholder collaboration in education.

We respectfully call on the Toronto Catholic District School Board to:

  1. Pause implementation of bell time changes pending proper consultation
  2. Provide full transparency on financial rationale and decision-making process
  3. Engage CSPCs, parents, and school staff in meaningful consultation before finalizing decisions
  4. Reassess the removal of critical student supports, particularly literacy intervention programs
  5. Establish a formal consultation framework for all future system-wide changes
Parents are not optional participants in education — we are partners.

We stand together to ensure decisions affecting our children are made with us, not for us.
