The Issue

We, members of the Atlanta tennis community, respectfully request a formal review and restructuring of the current management of McGhee Tennis Center and Washington Park, both City of Atlanta public tennis facilities. These are public facilities that have long served as essential community hubs for players of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Historically, these centers have provided accessible, affordable, and inclusive tennis programming to the surrounding community.

Over time, many community members have experienced a noticeable decline in the quality and availability of services at these centers. This has led to reduced engagement and participation from local residents who rely on these facilities for both recreation and competitive play. Previously vibrant gathering spots that fostered community connections and promoted a healthy lifestyle are now operating below their full potential.

Facts and figures from the Atlanta Parks and Recreation Department reveal a troubling decrease in programs and community involvement at McGhee Tennis Center and Washington Park. These declines contrast sharply with the increasing demand for public tennis facilities demonstrated by consistent usage and a growing waitlist for classes and events.

To restore the McGhee Tennis Center and Washington Park to their former status as thriving public assets, we propose the following actionable solutions:

1. Establish a community advisory board to work alongside city officials, ensuring that local voices are heard and integrated into decision-making processes.

2. Re-evaluate current management practices with input from regular facility users to identify areas for improvement and make necessary adjustments.

3. Increase transparency and accountability by publishing regular public reports on facility usage, maintenance, and programming.

4. Allocate additional resources or partnerships to expand tennis programming, including youth and adult leagues, workshops, and community events.

We believe that with these changes, McGhee Tennis Center and Washington Park can once again become vibrant spaces that reflect the needs and aspirations of our diverse community. By signing this petition, you are supporting our call for revitalizing these crucial community facilities.
