Whenever we needed the silence and focus for the late night grind, we could always rely on the library. Until now. Now the library closes at 12 every day, and 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.
- Late at night, when we need it the most, we're no longer able to study in any of the quiet sections (3FB, 4FB, the Stacks, the Tower Room, and Sherman) until 12:30, but have to relocate into blobby, Novak, Reiss Hall, and 1902 room where people are allowed to talk or use as a passageway - not the most productive. During winter, those rooms are also colder than the main rooms.
- Moreover, for some people like me, it is not possible to focus especially late at night in my room. Most other academic buildings are locked at that point, so there are barely any options to relocate.
- You can no longer find that one reference book you need or work on a digital project past midnight in 2fb, but have to pause your work flow and regain the motivation to work on it again the next day.
- Additionally, this change takes away yet another option of things to do Fridays and Saturday nights.
- Picking Fridays and Saturdays also sends a signal that Dartmouth encourages procrastination—exaggerating a problem many students already struggle with. Especially since oftentimes I, for example, would prefer to stay up later Fridays and Saturdays to finish my work so I can sleep earlier Sunday.
- The library is also a major asset to safety and accessibility, especially at night. It is public and well-lit. During winter, the library is a great building to cut since it is warm and not icy, completed with elevators.
- For the library to close at 12, students would start to pack up and leave around 11:50 – taking away critical time they need to study and sleep.
