Restore and Beautify Harehills for Future Generations

The Issue

Harehills, a vibrant and diverse community in Leeds, is a gem waiting to be polished. Its unique blend of cultures and potential makes it a lively neighborhood, offering a global palette of food, distinctive shopping experiences, and a constant buzz of activity. However, despite these treasures, Harehills suffers from neglect. Streets littered with glass, walls defaced by graffiti, and reports of gang violence starkly illustrate how this community has been abandoned by the local council. The recent riots of July 2024 further highlight the urgent need for attention and action. As one of the largest communities in Leeds, Harehills' plight raises a critical question: why is such a significant and diverse area overlooked by the local council? Why can the city allocate millions for a bike path to Bradford but not dedicate a fraction of that budget to cleaning and beautifying Harehills?

I firmly believe that if the council collaborates with this rich community, the residents' love for their neighbourhood would drive a collective cleanup effort. This would not only restore Harehills to its former beauty but also foster an environment befitting the vibrant, diverse community it is. More importantly, it would ensure a cleaner, safer, and more beautiful Harehills for future generations.

Therefore, I appeal to the Leeds City Council to invest in the restoration and beautification of Harehills. This initiative would engage and benefit the entire community, enabling residents to develop new skills while enhancing their local area. Recognising and honouring the significant role Harehills plays in our city and hearts, it is time for change.
