The Issue

Our community is under siege by a football coaching culture that does not reflect our values or our commitment to fostering a positive learning and athletic environment for our children. This petition is deeply personal to many of us because this isn't just impacting children; it's affecting OUR children, OUR grandchildren, and, by extension, every young member of Commerce City who deserves dignity and respect. Our children did not ask for this, nor do they deserve to endure degrading and bullying behavior from city employees that are paid to be the most exemplary role models to our students.

All meaningful organizational change has to start at the top. We as the community believe this change must begin at the top with the superintendent of Commerce City School System. All school employees, especially coaching staff, must adhere to a stringent code of ethics and conduct. It is dishonorable for coaches to engage in or perpetuate practices that degrade and intimidate our young athletes. This culture of bullying must be stopped to prevent any further harm to our students and ensure our schools are safe, inclusive, and nurturing environments.

Furthermore, a time-honored tradition of supporting our football team, whether in victory or defeat, has been stripped away from us. Allowing us access to our field is not merely about being present; it is intrinsic to our community solidarity.

Standing by our young athletes in times of triumph and in moments of learning is essential to build resilience promote excellence. This unnecessary confinement severs us from supporting our children and reinforcing community bonds.

Make your signature on this petition part of our collective signal to effect positive change. Our children's future depends on it.

Article: Psychological abuse continues to be the most frequently reported type of maltreatment among athletes leading to negative mental health such as low mood and self-esteem, increased anxiety, self-harm, and eating disorders. Preliminary evidence suggests athlete satisfaction can influence the perceived outcomes associated with psychological abuse. Despite its negative impacts on athletes, psychological abuse continues to be justified as a tool to enhance athletic performance.
