Restore Accessible Dining Options at EMU

The Issue

On August 18, 2025, EDining, the dining at Eastern Michigan University, announced a variety of changes to "benefit students". However, these changes do the complete opposite.

Specifically, by removing frequently used locations on campus (The Markets) and replacing them with nothing, these changes do not benefit students. Instead, they rob students, faculty, and staff of a convenient option between classes.

Furthermore, by removing options in the Student Center, which were primarily underused due to limited hours (not a lack of student interest), this will concentrate students in one part of campus, leading to worse wait times and a continually unsatisfactory experience.

In addition to this, despite claims of focusing in on what students enjoy, they have slashed the times that the locations that are left are open. For example, Eagle's Grind, a Coffee Shop, does not open until 3 pm. This is not an investment in what's left; it is shortsided at best, sabotage at worst.

This petition calls upon the administration of Eastern Michigan University and EDining to reverse these changes. Or, at the very least, ensure that food is accessible across campus for all students. Furthermore, we, the students, demand a town hall to talk with dining about these changes. If EDining truly wants to make dining that represents us, then they should talk to us.

Our demands are as follows:

  • Re-open or replace the Eagle's Markets to ensure students with tight schedules have the ability to eat during the day
  • Host a town hall with students to actually show that EDining is listening to our feedback.
  • Extend the hours of operation for the remaining dining places to ensure that there is more than one option before 10 am on campus.
  • Re-open or replace the dining options in the student center (with reasonable hours) to ensure that students are not all forced to go to one end of campus to use their meal plan.

Please sign this petition to make EDining understand that, at the end of the day, this university is for the students, not for a private corporation to turn a profit.
