Restorative Justice program at Amherst Regional Highschool

The Issue

As a student at Amherst Regional Highschool, I've personally experienced the positive impact of our Restorative Justice (RJ) program. It has provided me with a safe space to address conflicts with other students and helped me focus more on my academics. The RJ program is not just beneficial for me but also for many others. Since this program started, we have seen a significant decrease in student conflicts. The RJ coordinator's role is pivotal to this success. Aaron Buford’s dedication and commitment has made it possible for students like myself to navigate through difficult situations without escalating problems or facing disciplinary actions. He builds trust with students and makes sure any steps he takes to help solve conflicts is consented by all parties.

However, this valuable program is at risk of being cut from our school system due to budget cuts. This would be an enormous loss not only for the students who rely on it but also for the overall harmony within our schools.

According to data from the National Association of School Psychologists, restorative justice programs like ours can reduce suspension rates by 20-30% and improve school climate (NASP). Our own experience here in Amherst echoes these findings. Removing such an effective program would be an injustice to us all - students, educators, parents alike.

We urge you not only consider these facts but also listen to personal experiences like mine before making any decisions about cutting funds or positions related to the RJ program. Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving peace and promoting understanding within our schools by keeping the Restorative Justice Program intact.
