Dentro del actual debate mundial sobre la restitución del patrimonio robado y la descolonización de los museos debemos presionar ahora como comunidad para que todos nuestros antepasados guanches vuelvan a su hogar.
Este XAXO* GUANCHE fue expoliado de su lugar de enterramiento en una cueva-mausoleo del barranco de Herques en la isla de Tenerife en el siglo XVI y lleva en Madrid desde 1763 expuesto en diferentes museos dentro de una vitrina cual curiosidad colonialista. El Museo Arqueológico Nacional es custodio del cuerpo de uno de los indígenas de las Islas Canarias, el cual está expuesto al público en una vitrina. Este cuerpo guanche fue preparado ritualmente con la técnica del mirlado para lo que viniese después de la muerte. Su lugar de descanso debería estar en sus islas, a 2000 km de Madrid pero solo a 170 km de África.
Hay que impedir que el MAN (Museo Arqueológico Nacional de España) siga aplicando políticas imperialistas no cediendo la custodia de este ancestro guanche a su comunidad de origen, mientras lo expone al público. La dirección del MAN debe respetar y reconocer a las comunidades antiguas no eurocéntricas y para ello necesita desmantelar su postura colonialista hacia las Islas Canarias empezando por la restitución de este XAXO.
El XAXO guanche debe ser restituido inmediatamente a su comunidad.
Porque:
- Será un primer paso en el reconocimiento de la pérdida de identidad causada en el pueblo canario debido al borrado sistemático de la cultura indígena durante y después de la conquista de Canarias por los castellanos durante los siglos XV y XVI.
- La restitución del XAXO, será también un necesitado primer paso en la descolonización del MAN.
El ministro español de Cultura, Miguel Izeta, dice que "Tenemos museos que no son ni colonizadores ni colonizados" y que "Las piezas que están en los museos están ahí porque fueron legítimamente adquiridas por España" (ABC cultura 11.2022 ).
Sin embargo, el XAXO guanche del barranco de Herques fue uno de los botines de la conquista y, por tanto, no pertenece ni a Madrid ni al MAN. Algunos dicen que los descendientes de los indígenas comercializaron con ellos, pero, ¿habría ocurrido esto si no estuvieran bajo una sociedad gravemente desequilibrada donde reinaban la pobreza y las injusticias?
Su devolución ha sido reiteradamente reclamada por las autoridades de las islas, pero Madrid se niega a cumplirla debido a su extraordinario estado de perfecta conservación, único en el mundo.
Ahora es nuestro momento, el de la comunidad, de luchar para que él y otros xaxos de todo el mundo sean restituidos.
Para nosotros, los canarios, los XAXOS son nuestro pasado, nuestras raíces, no una curiosidad.

*XAXO es el nombre correcto para referirse a los cuerpos indígenas preparados con la técnica del mirlado, no momias, como las he nombrado en mi manifesto anterior. El hecho de que haya utilizado sin saberlo un lenguaje erróneo demuestra cuánto trabajo queda por hacer para conocer nuestro propio patrimonio y liberar nuestras mentes del colonialismo.

The GUANCHE XAXO* was plundered from its burial place in a cave-mausoleum in the ravine of Herques on the island of Tenerife in the 16th century and has been sequestered in Madrid since 1763. While a colonialist curiosity for the National Archaeological Museum (MAN) the XAXO is the body of one of the indigenous people of the Canary Islands, a body that was ritually prepared for what may be after death. His resting place should be in his islands, 2000 km from Madrid but only 170 km from Africa.
The MAN (Spain’s national archeological museum) must be prevented from continuing to pursue imperialist policies by displaying this human body to the public. It must respect and recognise non-Eurocentric ancient communities and for that it needs to dismantle its colonialist stance towards the Canary Islands starting with the restitution of this XAXO.
The Guanche XAXO must be immediately restituted to his community as recognition towards the beliefs held by ancient Canarians. Because:
- This will be a first step in acknowledging the loss of identity caused in the Canary Islands’s people by the systematic erasing of the indigenous culture during and after the conquest of the Canary Islands by the Castilians during the 15th and 16th centuries.
- The restitution of the XAXO, will also be a first step in decolonizing the MAN.
The Spanish Minister of Culture Miguel Izeta says that "We have museums that are neither colonized nor colonizers" and that "The pieces that are in the museums are there because they were legitimately acquired by Spain" (ABC cultura 11.2022 ).
Yet the Guanche XAXO from the Herques ravine was one of the spoils of the conquest and therefore belongs neither to Madrid nor to MAN. Some say that the descendants of the indigenous people commercialized with them, but, would this have happened if they weren’t under a severe unbalanced society where poverty and injustices reigned?
Its return has been repeatedly demanded by the authorities of the islands but Madrid refuses to comply because of its extraordinary state of perfect preservation that is unique in the world.
Now is our time, the community, to fight to have him and others xaxos from around the world restituted.
For us, Canary Islands people, the XAXOS are our past, our roots, not a curiosity.
Within the current world wide debate on restitution of stolen heritage and decolonization of the museums we must push now as a community to bring all our ancestors back to their home!!!
