The Last Straw: Call for Guelph restaurants to serve straws only on request

The goal of this petition is to raise support for an anti-straw movement in Guelph. My aim is to collect signatures and take them to restaurants in Guelph to persuade them to switch to a policy where servers will only give out straws upon customer requests, and to use compostable or reusable straws instead of plastic.
Disposable straws provide minimal convenience and long-lasting damage to the earth. The average lifespan of the straw is 200 years, it is eventually broken down into infinitesimally small plastic particles that stay in ecosystems forever. The estimated usage of straws in North America is 1.6 straws per person per day. In Guelph alone the amount of straws used is 206 000 a day, almost enough to fill 20 school buses! If we can create this small change in how restaurants serve their drinks, we can save huge amounts of waste from entering our environment, and perhaps shift society's collective consciousness about the usage of disposable products.
You can also support this movement by asking servers not to serve you a straw when you dine at restaurants, or making a request to owners that they change their policy to only serving straws on request.
