Respect SW: accountability and change in pole dance heels
La causa
What happened at Exotic Generation Spain cannot be dismissed as “just art.”
I was there.
I saw it.
And I am part of the community it harms.
I am a stripper.
This was not unexpected.
Two months before the competition, in my own living room, Eva K. shared the idea of this piece with me. From a place of trust, I asked her not to do it. I explained clearly the impact it would have: reinforcing stigma, normalising violence, and deepening the disrespect towards sex workers (SW) and strippers dancing in heels.
She chose to go ahead anyway.
On stage, that choice became reality: a performance portraying violence against a stripper, combined with messaging against this profession.
And it did not stop there.
It was applauded.
It was validated.
It was awarded.
This is where it stops being individual.
Because when something like this is rewarded, a message is sent: that stigma against SW is acceptable, that violence can be turned into spectacle, and that our dignity is negotiable.
I did not stay silent.
I stood in protest, holding signs in support of SW.
That voice was ignored.
Instead, this has been reframed as something personal.
It is not.
This is structural.
Pole dance in heels exists because of SW, because of skrippers, because of a culture that continues to be borrowed from while the people behind it are still stigmatised.
This moment calls for accountability.
If we speak of dignity, then it must be shown through action:
• The organisation behind Exotic Generation Spain should publicly acknowledge the harm caused and reflect on why this performance was allowed and rewarded
• Keeping the award without reflection raises serious questions about the values being upheld
• The group behind the piece has the opportunity to take responsibility and act with integrity
Signing this petition is not neutral.
It is taking a position.
We call on:
• The organisation to sign as a first step towards repair
• The performers to sign as a symbolic act of accountability
• The wider community to come together and refuse the normalisation of stigma
This is not about creating conflict.
It is about refusing silence.
What happened cannot be undone.
But ignoring it is also a choice.
And that choice has consequences.
We are watching.
We are speaking.
And we will not minimise harm to protect anyone’s comfort.
Because SW deserve respect.
Because skrippers built this space.
Because our dignity is not optional.
Sign. Stand. Be accountable.
