(RESOLVED) (SEE UPDATES) End the Erasure of the "Fighting Irish" Name
The Issue
UPDATE REGARDING CLOSURE OF THE PETITION
As per Principal Daryl Weaver:
"VC has always had and will continue to have the Finnegan mascot and "Fighting Irish" moniker. If any members of our community have future concerns, its always best to contact VC Admin directly at the school"
------------------------
OLD DESCRIPTION
The Vancouver College community has been made aware of efforts to slowly erase the "Fighting" from the "Fighting Irish" name. Many in the community who have studied, played, worked, and "fought" under this name wish to keep the name in use. The community sees it as a vital and nostalgic piece in the long 100+ years of history of Vancouver College, and in collaboration with the Fighting Finnegan, a unifying name and symbol under which the community bands. Ultimately, we believe tradition, and the fighting spirit, matters.
The community believes that the word "Fighting" is specifically crucial to the name. It serves as a reminder of our ability to keep "fighting" in the face of trials and tribulations at home, in the classroom, and on the field. It also acts as an indicator of our community's grit, determination, heart, and willingness to protect our values and what we stand for.
The following signatories support this petition urging the administration of Vancouver College to completely end all plans to slowly erase the "Fighting" from the "Fighting Irish" name. The signatories are people involved, or formerly involved, in the Vancouver College community. This may include but is not limited to: students, alumni, family members of students or alumni, current and former employees of Vancouver College, current and former members of Vancouver College boards, current and former members of Vancouver College organizations, current and former members of Vancouver College athletic programs/teams, and current and former members of Vancouver College sub-communities.
