Resignation or Removal of Martin Jarmond as UCLA Athletic Director

Resignation or Removal of Martin Jarmond as UCLA Athletic Director
The Issue
We, the undersigned, call for the resignation or termination of Martin Jarmond as The Alice and Nahum Lainer Family Director of Athletics at the University of California, Los Angeles. His leadership has failed to meet the standards of accountability, transparency, and competitiveness that UCLA Athletics deserves.
As the leader of UCLA Athletics, Mr. Jarmond is entrusted with upholding the highest standards of leadership, integrity, and accountability. However, under his tenure, several concerning issues have emerged:
- Lack of trust and transparency: Decisions have often been made without meaningful communication or engagement with key stakeholders, leaving students, alumni, and supporters feeling shut out.
- Unapproachable: Leadership requires openness and accessibility. Many within the UCLA Football Alumni have expressed frustration with phone calls and emails going unanswered, as well as limited opportunities to voice concerns or receive clear responses from the Athletic Director’s office.
- Football program performance: UCLA Football, once a cornerstone of national prominence, has not been nationally competitive in decades. Despite significant resources and a proud tradition, the program continues to underperform, diminishing both morale and UCLA’s athletic reputation. This is not simply a short-term issue, but a systemic problem that requires a complete structural overhaul of the athletic department. That overhaul must include cooperation with the admissions department to ensure that talented athletes are recruited, supported, and accepted into the university.
Beyond calling for a change in leadership, we also believe it is time for UCLA to modernize its athletic structure. We urge the university to adopt a model already in place at other major universities; establishing a General Manager that oversees the entire football operation and reports directly to the Chancellor. This model provides stronger oversight, ensures accountability, and allows the Athletic Director to focus on the broader needs of UCLA Athletics while elevating the football program’s competitiveness.
UCLA deserves a football program and athletics department led with integrity, vision, and transparency. For these reasons, we respectfully call for Martin Jarmond’s resignation or removal, and for the university to implement a modernized leadership structure that positions UCLA Football and UCLA Athletics for long-term success. Now is the time for bold change to restore pride and competitiveness to UCLA Football.
