Resign Education Minister Pradhan: Support Sonam Wangchuk’s Fight for Students and Ladakh
The Issue
Sonam Wangchuk, the renowned climate activist, educator, and Ramon Magsaysay Award winner, is currently on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. He is risking his health to demand accountability in India's education system and long-overdue justice for Ladakh.
Key Demands:
- Immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for repeated irregularities in competitive exams (including NEET paper leaks), student suicides, and systemic failures that are destroying young lives.
- Fulfill promises to Ladakh: Include the region under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution for tribal protections, land rights, cultural preservation, and environmental safeguards in this fragile Himalayan border area.
- Greater democratic autonomy and accountability so elected representatives have real power.
Sonam Wangchuk has dedicated decades to education reform in Ladakh and innovative climate solutions like Ice Stupas. He joined the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest because education and environment are inseparable for him. "I am sitting on a fast in support of both issues," he said.
The government must act during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Students deserve a fair education system. Ladakh’s people deserve protection for their land, culture, and future. Sonam Wangchuk should not have to put his life at risk for basic justice.
We urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Government to:
1. Accept Minister Pradhan’s resignation and reform the examination system.
2. Deliver constitutional safeguards for Ladakh without further delay.
3. Engage in meaningful dialogue to end the hunger strike and address these crises.
Every signature matters. Stand with Sonam Wangchuk for the future of our students and the Himalayas.
