Krantzkloof Nature Reserve is spread out over 668 ha and has been a much-loved natural haven for eThekwini's ratepayers, residents and visitors since 1950. It is a prime example of how an important natural asset can be of enormous value to the surrounding community.  Access to the reserve has become particularly relevant during the current Covid 19 pandemic where local residents are desperate for access to open space and contact with Nature.

Over recent months access to the reserve has been severely restricted with the closure of the Nkutu entrance (no pedestrian traffic into the reserve from Monday to Friday) and the permanent closure, with new razor wire fence, of the Uve Entrance. In addition, the View site in Bridle Road has been permanently closed for some time.

These closures have taken place without any consultation or explanation and have severely impacted on the communities’ ability to enjoy a wonderful natural asset.

The closure of the View site has denied the broader Durban community access to one of the most stunning scenic vistas in the entire eThekwini Metro area. Local trail runners, members of bona fide outdoor activity/environmental/flora/fauna organisations, nature lovers and families can no longer enjoy regular access to the reserve from many previously viable community access points.

In short, the available access points, numbers of people allowed each day and times, are far too limited for a Nature Reserve of this scale, significance and biodiversity.

All signatories to this petition are willing to pay the daily charge/obtain an Ezemvelo Rhino card and abide by all COVID protocols and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife regulations.

The surrounding community has always enthusiastically supported the reserve. The new harsh restrictions undermine this support and provoke desperate actions (such as ignoring the rules, cutting or jumping fences). Thus it creates space for disrespect of valid rules and regulations.

This petition requests Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife to:

1. Enter into bona-fide consultation with relevant community structures with regard to access to the reserve
2. Re-open the Uve road entrance for pedestrian access from 6am to 6pm each day
3. Open the Nkutu entrance to the Molweni Trail for pedestrian access from 6am to 6pm each week day (currently only open at weekends/public holidays)
4. Re-open the View site on Bridle Road to the public

Please support this petition so that we can restore access to and pride in our Krantzkloof Nature Reserve.
