We have ten days until another proposal appears in front of Winthrop Planning Board on Monday , January 17th at 7:00pm in the Harvey Hearing Room , basement Winthrop Town Hall .
I’m hoping by now if you are familiar with this story you will consider stopping by and signing . Within the last 35 years there have been 5 proposals to build and 5 denials all the way to Superior Land Court. In 2017 the Zoning Board of Appeals advised the previous owner not to return. It was a waste of tax payers money and time and they needed to understand the word No !
The land was sold in 2019 to politically connected and influenced people . They purchased this land for a mere 30,000 knowing fair well the history of the 5 denials to build . I would ask why anyone would purchase land with that history ? It was deemed unbuildable , lack of legal frontage and an access road that will never be wide enough for fire trucks and first responders to safely and timely make this narrow hairpin of a turn in case of a fire not to mention if several fire trucks were required . This land is in the middle of a city block surrounded by houses on all sides .
Twenty abutters , homes and families are opposed to the disruption of this land . This borders the wetlands is in a high water table and we would loose our beloved mature trees that help to mitigate problems from storm surges and rain . This would disrupt the wild life , the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of all these direct abutters not to mention the strain on utilities , parking and disruption it causes the entire neighborhood .
If you kindly take the time to read the petition , I would then ask myself why would anyone purchase land with this kind of negative history ? What do they think they will accomplish ? Why was a curb cut in front of 40r Banks Street without notice to abutters by these new owners granted by the Department of Public Works where there are direct relatives to these owners ? Why did I get an offer to purchase my home by the ex town council woman and mother to these owners on her realtor company’s letterhead ? She stated she had 2 very interested buyers for my home . Could they be the two brothers ? Her sons ? Did they want to do the right thing and purchase my home which has the only legal frontage ? We will never know , because they reneged and very shortly after they went ahead and cut that curb not knowing if they would ever get an approval to build ! This is what we are up against . We have 466 signatures and our goal was 500 . Then this petition becomes a strong recommendation to the Town Planners to Stop the Build . Is this yet another case of profits over people ? Are we thinking of how densely populated this town has become ? Do we need to fill every space and strain our neighborhoods ? What happen to open and green space ? Saving the trees ?
I am sure you are tired of this story and I am also very tired .
Please only ten days left . I have set up a Covid safe signing station in my home . This would be contactless . There are pens , petitions , pictures , hand sanitizer and a few treats. I will be most grateful . The neighborhood would be extremely grateful .
it is the right thing to do .
Thank you ,
Diane Spicer & Brad Armstrong
Please stop by between 8am - 5pm
