Remove Ineffective and Non-responsive Leadership at the School District
The Issue
Our school district is ranked among the worst in New York State and is likely the worst in the greater Capital District. Compared to our neighboring districts -- Taconic Hills, Ichabod Crane and any district in Dutchess County -- ours is the worst.
At the same time, our superintendent receives over $200,000 in annual compensation and this "leadership" helps the HCSD rank 35 out of 91 area districts in salaries paid. All while struggling to graduate even 50% of its students.
The result: we all pay stunning school taxes, the District operates in a vacuum, and the students are not being served. To compound this problem, recent demographic data show that the fastest growing segments of the area population are young adults, many with children and all of child-bearing age. Where are those kids going to be educated? The answer is clearly not at the HCSD -- it barely educates anyone.
To solve the problem we must start at the top: it's time for the leadership of this under-performing and over-funded district to go. We need, and our kids deserve,a team with demonstrable skills in education, administration and leadership. And a Ph.D. would be nice -- not one staff person or teacher at the HCSD has earned a doctorate! And we -- you and me -- pay them as if they were over-achieving leaders when, in fact, they are underachieving and overpaid.
