For years, the Harijan Colony has been a hotbed of criminal activities and social vices like drug peddling,theft,assault,robbery and eve teasing.The area is also filthy and is one of the uncleanest and unhealthiest locality of Shillong.The living conditions in the Colony is pitiful and most of the residents are forced to live in dirty living spaces.Violent incidents have always been reported from the area in the psat few years. The Colony is meant for the Municipal employees of the Government,but as things stand today,most of the residents are illegal squatters living in illegal quarters,rented out to them.

The Government of Meghalaya had recently formed a High Level Committee to try and address the long standing problems and issues of the area and had come up with a proposal to relocate the residents to better amenities and residency. Relocating the people living in the Colony, to a residence already identified by the Meghalaya Government will go a long way to solve the menace and also improve the living conditions and standards of the Harijan colony residents.

Moreover,the relocation will solve illegal settlement in the Colony and also decongest the commercial area and the space available can then be utilised for commercial parking, shopping complex and others to enable the upliftment of the livelihoods of the State's unemployed youth.
