RESIDENT OPPOSITION TO: 1714 EAST LAKE ROAD - SOLAR PROJECT

RESIDENT OPPOSITION TO: 1714 EAST LAKE ROAD - SOLAR PROJECT
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of Skaneateles, Spafford, and the surrounding communities, are writing to formally express our strong opposition to the proposed "non-community" solar development project in our area.
Our Concerns:
1. Limited Solar Efficiency:
Our region receives significant cloud cover and long winters, making it an impractical and inefficient location for large-scale solar power generation. Developers often overestimate solar yields in regions like Central New York.
2. Loss of Agricultural Land:
The conversion of working farmland into industrial energy production removes vital land from agricultural use, undermines our farming heritage, and threatens future food security. This practice disrupts the rural landscape and the generational use of land.
3. Visual and Aesthetic Impact:
Large solar arrays, fencing, and associated infrastructure are incompatible with the scenic character of Spafford and Borodino, particularly near Lake Skaneateles. These developments diminish property values and tourism appeal.
4. Concerns About Livestock and EMFs:
Local farmers have expressed concern about how underground EMFs and electrical components might impact livestock behavior and health. While more scientific studies are needed, the concerns of working farmers should not be dismissed
5. Long-Term Maintenance and Responsibility:
Maintenance of these sites is uncertain if the project is sold or abandoned. Decommissioning plans are often vague, and taxpayers should not bear the burden of cleanup or environmental restoration.
6. Lack of Transparency:
Many residents were unaware of this proposal until late in the process. We call for greater transparency and community input before such irreversible projects are approved.
We respectfully urge the Planning Board and County to reject this proposal and preserve the natural, agricultural, and rural character of our community. There are better suited areas for solar development that do not sacrifice farmland, wildlife, scenic beauty, or local livelihoods.
