The Issue
A bad choice – not a bad person! Please give Jason a second chance at life.
In November 2022 I became pen pals with Jason. It has opened my eyes to the criminal Justice system in America but also to Mental Health Judgements. The USA has far more people incarcerated than any other country in the world. It’s using prison in form or punishment – not as form or stabilization and rehabilitation, so people get another chance and the tools at hand they’d need to live a better life. Once someone has committed a crime and served their sentence in a US prison, they are not helped to become supported members of society. Instead, they are stuck in a never-ending cycle of reoffending due to the systems failure to rehabilitate. Millions of Americans are incarcerated in overcrowded, violent, and inhumane jails and prisons, yet they are supposed to be acting among rules and commands that often are not reasonable and become better persons and take right choices without any offer of help.
About Jason
Jason has suffered abuse in various forms from a very young age. When just 5 years old he was involved in sexual child abuse. Physical and verbal abuse was playing a huge part in his life – up until now. He went in and out of psychiatric hospitals as well as the criminal justice system. Yet he never found the help he needed to build a life away from criminal activity or to rehabilitate and support him to find the right path in life. He faced more neglect in his early years of childhood than most have their entire life. He never had a loving home and although he might have had very few people around him that loved and cared for him, it wasn’t enough to cure the scars left by abuse, abandonment and exploitation. Since a young age he was diagnosed with ADHD and a bipolar disorder.
Looking back at the life of Jason up until now, you will come to see that he had no fighting chance of living a “normal” life. Yet when you talk to him and see him for the person he evolved in, you will notice that he has grown immensely. He is reflecting a lot on himself and actions he does. He doesn’t want anything more than being a loving father and husband, getting a second chance at life and being a good member of society. He wants to give back and try to help young people to not make the choices he has made when he was young and had nobody to turn to. He is a loving and caring man, that has fully grown and completely changed. He is no longer the 21-year-old man that once committed the crimes he’s incarcerated for. You will come to see that he learnt his lesson and is in no means a threat to society.
Since his sentence he is trying to prove that he never intentionally meant to harm anyone, and it is still an ongoing battle which he will not give up on. He doesn’t have it in him to hurt people consciously. He served 15 years of his life sentence for a crime that he committed when he was just 21 years old. He has never been evaluated psychologically in regard to a trial, although his conditions and forms of abuse that he suffered are known, nor does proof of accidental substance abuse prior to the actual crime found credibility even though proven by an expert as recent as 2022 evidentiary hearing concerning a valid claim of involuntary intoxication. As the situation is now, he will never have a second chance at life, as Florida doesn't have the possibility of parole.
Why vote?
I am in no way denying his crimes and neither is he. Jason knows that he is not a victim nor innocent. He wished that he never had lost his way and understands what his doings caused. He is extremely sorry for his crimes, empathetic to the family it affected and tortured by what he did. However, I 100% believe that he has changed and learnt his lesson to turn his life around completely and be a valued member of society. I don’t believe Jason had a chance at life and I do think it was inevitable that he went to prison. A hasty investigation which lead to the sentence he got and such “tunnel vision” not taking his past life and mental health into consideration when it is so crucial to understand the person Jason was when committing the crime is just one of many reasons we like to ask for your vote. Our final goal is a fair and completely new trial, taking everything into consideration there is. Asking for clemency is just one step closer to get Jason a second chance at life. Showing people believe in second chances and also in Jason gives us the opportunity change his life completely.
Please can we have your vote, so he doesn’t need to spend life behind bars. Please can we come together and end this unjust circle that punishes inmates instead of rehabilitating them. Please can we come together and stand up for mental health importance and awareness also in a criminal justice system. We are asking for as many votes possible so we can present our petition to Ron DeSantis, the Governor of Florida, to grant him clemency and a fair, new trial. Jason Allen Tiszai is not a bad person - he made a bad choice. He deserves a second chance at life.
