The Issue

During my recent visit to Ujjain, I was heartbroken by what I saw. Two young elephants were standing in the sweltering heat on the crowded roads, surrounded by auto-rickshaws. They were not majestic beings in their natural habitat, but mistreated creatures waiting like vehicles for tourists to mount. The sadhus or handlers accompanying them were armed with sticks to prod and hit their feet, showing no regard for their wellbeing. One of these majestic creatures appeared unwell and was visibly struggling, yet had no opportunity to rest or recuperate.

Elephants are gentle giants of the wild and deserve to live in environments that cater to their natural habits. The hard, hot roads of a bustling city are no place for them; their foot pads, designed for the soft mud and grasses of the jungles, can suffer significant harm from prolonged exposure to concrete. This not only affects their physical health but can also lead to severe psychological distress.

In many parts of India, elephants are subjected to severe stress, injury, and illness when forced to live in urban settings. The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 is supposed to safeguard our precious wildlife, including elephants, by providing them a safe and natural habitat. However, these laws are often not enforced, leaving animals vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.

Ujjain, known for its deep spirituality and respect for life, should stand as a beacon of hope for these elephants. We must call upon the local authorities, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the management of Maharishi Sandipani's Ashram to take immediate action. These elephants need to be rescued and rehabilitated to a sanctuary where they can live out their lives in peace and dignity.

There are several wildlife rehabilitation centers across India that have successfully rescued and cared for elephants. By partnering with these organizations, the authorities can ensure a coordinated and compassionate rescue operation.

Please join me in urging the concerned officials to take swift and decisive action to rescue these elephants. Let us ensure that Ujjain sets a powerful example of how we can honor and preserve our wildlife. Sign this petition to call for the immediate rescue and rehabilitation of the elephants outside Maharishi Sandipani's Ashram. Together, we can make a difference in their lives.
