As a black female voter in Natchitoches, Louisiana, I find it deeply troubling that our city has chosen to name the gymnasium inside the Martin Luther King Recreation Center after John Winston Sr. This decision does not reflect my values or those of many others in our community. John Winston's words (as reflected in his campaign endorsement letter to the community) do not emulate those of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man who dedicated his life to unity and equality.

Our city should honor figures who truly represent our community's values and aspirations. The renaming of this gymnasium sends a message about whom we choose to honor and how we interpret their legacies. It is essential that these decisions are made with care and respect for all members of our community.

Natchitoches is known for its rich history, diverse population, and commitment to progress. Let us uphold these values by reconsidering this decision. We urge the City Council to rescind their resolution naming the Martin Luther King Center’s Gymnasium after John Winston Sr., as it does not align with what Dr. King stood for.
