PETITION TO RESCIND SUMMIT SCHOOL DISTRICT RESOLUTION #2022-23-8 (SUPPORT FOR INCLUSION OF LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, TRANSGENDER, QUEER + [HEREIN, LGBTQ+] REPRESENTATION IN CURRICULUM AND STANDARDS)

Background: The Summit School District’s (SSD) Board of Education recently passed a resolution calling for the inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer representation in grades K-3 curriculum. This clearly controversial resolution was passed unilaterally by the seven members of the board without considering input from parents, community members, or our significant Hispanic community (~40%). This is in violation of Policy AF, which states “SSD shall engage in authentic collaboration and partnership with all families, inclusive of race, economic status, ethnicity, religion, culture, and language, as essential partners in students' education.”

Directive: We are unequivocally supportive of equitable opportunity for all students, and acceptance and respectful treatment of all. We also believe that an honest rendering of our history should be taught in an age-appropriate manner. However, we do not believe that intentionally pointing out immutable characteristics such as sexual orientation and skin color when teaching about historical figures will lead to favorable outcomes. In fact, we are concerned that focusing on immutable traits will elevate the importance of these traits amongst our younger students. Young, impressionable minds would be better served learning about the importance of one’s character and values.

The signatories of this letter are requesting that the recently passed Resolution 2022-23-8 be rescinded. Summit School District’s accreditation score dropped 11% this year and was downgraded to “Improvement Plan.” SSD academic performance has been rapidly declining since 2014. All efforts should be made to improve student education through a rigorous curriculum focused on the basics, with special emphasis being placed on K-3 English Literacy. Resolution 2022-23-8 is an unwelcome distraction in these efforts.

Antecedentes: La Junta de Educación del Distrito Escolar de Summit (SSD) aprobó recientemente una resolución que pide la inclusión de representación de lesbianas, gays, bisexuales, transgénero y queer en el plan de estudios de los grados K-3. Esta resolución claramente controvertida fue aprobada unilateralmente por los siete miembros de la junta sin considerar los aportes de los padres, miembros de la comunidad o nuestra importante comunidad hispana (~40%). Esto es una violación de la Política AF, que establece que "SSD se involucrará en una auténtica colaboración y asociación con todas las familias, independientemente de la raza, el estado económico, el origen étnico, la religión, la cultura y el idioma, como socios esenciales en la educación de los estudiantes".

Directiva: Apoyamos inequívocamente la igualdad de oportunidades para todos los estudiantes y la aceptación y el trato respetuoso de todos. También creemos que se debe enseñar una interpretación honesta de nuestra historia de una manera apropiada para la edad. Sin embargo, no creemos que señalar intencionalmente características inmutables, como la orientación sexual y el color de la piel, al enseñar sobre figuras históricas conduzca a resultados favorables. De hecho, nos preocupa que centrarnos en los rasgos inmutables eleve la importancia de estos rasgos entre nuestros estudiantes más jóvenes. Las mentes jóvenes e impresionables estarían mejor atendidas aprendiendo sobre la importancia del carácter y los valores de uno.

Los firmantes de esta carta solicitan que se deje sin efecto la Resolución 2022-23-8 recientemente aprobada. El puntaje de acreditación del Distrito Escolar de Summit cayó un 11% este año y se rebajó a "Plan de mejora". El desempeño académico de SSD ha disminuido rápidamente desde 2014. Se deben hacer todos los esfuerzos para mejorar la educación de los estudiantes a través de un plan de estudios riguroso centrado en lo básico, con especial énfasis en la alfabetización en inglés K-3. La resolución 2022-23-8 es una distracción no deseada en estos esfuerzos.
