The Issue
High school students at Baylor are facing a scheduling conflict that is affecting both their scholastic and social experiences. The annual prom, a significant milestone in the high school journey, is set to take place on the same weekend as the Youth in Government (YIG) conference, a pivotal event for students engaged in debate and civic leadership.
Prom is not just a dance; it is a rite of passage, a chance for students to celebrate their hard work and friendships before graduation. Unfortunately, the overlapping date with YIG forces students to make a difficult choice between attending an enriching educational conference and participating in a cherished social tradition.
The YIG conference is a vital platform where students learn about government processes, develop their public speaking skills, and enhance their understanding of civic duties. Its importance is recognized not only academically but also as a crucial character-building opportunity for aspiring young leaders.
To ensure that students do not have to compromise one important experience for another, we propose rescheduling the prom to a different weekend. This solution would allow students the opportunity to gain valuable life experience at YIG and still enjoy the memorable moments that prom offers.
The logistical adjustments required are minimal compared to the overwhelming benefits of allowing students to attend both events. Altering the date could be achieved by consulting the venue and vendors involved, as well as considering school schedules and community events to find a suitable alternative. With adequate notice and cooperation, this change is entirely feasible and would be greatly appreciated by students and their families.
Please sign this petition to reschedule the prom date so Baylor students can participate in both these important life events without conflict. We believe that by working together, we can find a solution that enriches our students' experiences and supports their academic and social growth.
