Rerelease Groundbreaking Gay Film Deathwatch
The Issue
Deathwatch, an adaptation of Jean Genet’s Haute Surveillance, was one of the first American films to openly depict homosexuality and to market itself to a gay audience. Released in 1965, it was a daring exploration of Genet’s themes of crime and sexuality in a time when homosexuality was illegal in the United States, which resulted in it largely being buried. Additionally, it was a passion project for Leonard Nimoy, who produced and starred in the film a year before he forever changed popular culture as Mr. Spock in Star Trek. Currently, Deathwatch is only available as low quality, unofficial snippets and files. On such a nebulous platform as YouTube, the film runs the risk of being lost without an official rerelease. Such an important and fascinating film should receive an official rerelease in order to reach a wider audience, rectify the censorship which has buried it since its release, and protect it from the fate of countless pieces of lost media. We humbly ask that those with the power protect Deathwatch and make it officially available.
