Require VRChat to implement enhanced systemic change To reduce harm

The Issue

Opinion: VRChat holds incredible potential to offer companionship and a positive escape for individuals facing challenges in traditional social settings, such as those with disabilities who find it difficult to venture outside their homes.

However, it's also rife with negativity, grooming, child endangerment, and even the alarming potential for fostering domestic terrorism. These dangers stem from glaring flaws in the platform's report system, sign-up process, & the absence of realistic tutorials.

To create a safer environment for all users while preserving its benefits for those who need it most:
1. Enhanced Tutorials: Comprehensive guides will help new users navigate safely.
2. Government ID Sign-Up: Ensuring accountability by verifying user identities.
3. Age Segmentation: Protecting younger users by separating them from adults.

These measures are crucial to safeguard vulnerable populations and enhance user experience on VRChat. Please sign this petition to urge VRChat developers to implement these changes by 2030!

As the VR landscape rapidly expands, the necessity for robust user safety measures becomes paramount. With approximately 171 million active virtual reality (VR) users worldwide as of 2024, including 2.5 million monthly active users on VRChat, the platform's growth is undeniable.

If VRChat continues to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.5%, we could see around 30 million users by 2044. This significant expansion underscores the urgent need for improved safety features, including age verification and player base segmentation, to protect users.

The Need for Enhanced Tutorials and Age Verification
Currently, VRChat lacks comprehensive tutorials and a robust sign-up process that includes age verification. This gap in the system makes it difficult to report users who are underage, posing significant safety risks. A better introduction to the game and a mandatory government ID sign-up for age verification are critical steps in creating a safer, more secure environment.

The Threats
Without proper measures, VR platforms like VRChat become vulnerable to various threats, including:

Exposure to Inappropriate Content: Young users can easily access spaces meant for adults, exposing them to harmful behaviors and content. Similar to how individuals can easily access inappropriate content through simple Google searches without child protection software on their devices, this is largely facilitated by the inadequate management of the internet in the United States and other countries, primarily due to systemic intentional negligence and profit-seeking motives.

Human Trafficking and Radicalization: The anonymity of VR platforms can be exploited by bad actors to engage in human trafficking or radicalize vulnerable individuals, potentially contributing to horrific outcomes like suicide & worse.

Cyber Espionage:

As VRChat continues to grow, the risk of cyber espionage increases. Imagine a scenario where children of military personnel, while playing on VRChat, inadvertently share sensitive information that could be exploited by foreign agents. Consider a scenario wherein a foreign agent befriends a targeted individual and persuades them to unknowingly accept malware trojan horses, either through platforms like Discord or via physical media such as Wi-Fi-enabled devices added to their home network, or even an external hard drive disguised as a storage upgrade, to cite a few examples.

The Proposed Solutions

Enhanced Tutorials: A comprehensive tutorial system that intuitively guides new players through the platform's features and safety protocols. This will ensure that users are better prepared to navigate the VR environment safely. I believe that users below the adult age should receive an intuitive and accessible cybersecurity training tutorial. This tutorial would educate them on how to evade players who distribute malware, engage in abuse, and even participate in grooming for human trafficking rings. This becomes especially crucial in the absence of a more robust sign-up process that conducts background checks on players.

Government ID Sign-Up: Mandatory government ID verification during the sign-up process to ensure age-appropriate interactions and to prevent underage users from accessing adult spaces.

Age Segmentation:
Implementation of age segmentation to create distinct, age-appropriate environments. This will help in limiting the interaction between minors and adults, reducing the risk of exposure to inappropriate content. This could be done by allowing creators who make avatars to hard-lock their adult avatars to only be able to be seen by users who are 18 or older from a creation standpoint. The same could be done with worlds that contain adult content, assets, or avatars. Age segmentation should be hard coded into the structure of the game. They should also enable users to create public groups with predetermined age ranges. For instance, consider a scenario where someone wishes to organize a social event aimed at connecting individuals of their own generation. Let's say the millennials plan a gathering, so they establish a public world where only individuals aged 28 to 43 can participate. This solution would address numerous interaction issues and would be remarkably straightforward and cost-effective to implement. Since its inception, there have been tens or even hundreds of ID verification companies that could have been integrated.

The Benefits
Implementing these measures will not only protect users but also enhance the overall VRChat experience by:

Creating a Safer Environment:

Ensuring that users interact with age-appropriate peers, reducing the risk of exposure to harmful content.
Enhancing User Trust: Building trust within the community by showing a commitment to user safety and responsible platform management.
Preventing Cybercrime: Reducing the risk of cyber espionage and other cybercrimes by ensuring that all users are properly verified. By introducing players to the problem from the get-go, the number of events staff have to monitor are drastically reduced, creating long term savings for the company by reducing .

Call to Action
We urge VRChat and other VR platforms to take immediate action by introducing better tutorials, mandatory government ID sign-up, and age segmentation by 2030. By doing so, we can create a safer, more secure VR environment for everyone.
