Good Evening All,
The OER taskforce is moving along swimmingly! I am happy to say that change to textbooks may be seen within the next year, so Fall 2025 or into 2026. With this being said, however, I have another favor I would like to ask and this is a big one.
I would like to ask every one of you, to email UTSA President Taylor Eighmy at president.eighmy@utsa.edu with the subject line "Stop SGA's Discrimination" and this content (you can copy and paste it, and edit it as you feel like):
"Hello President Eighmy,
I am writing to inform you of my dissatisfaction with SGA's discriminatory practices and conduct in how they represent the student body and how they run elections. Your university and your leadership have refused to do anything about it for over a year. Not letting online students run, nevertheless disabled and non-able-bodied persons to run, is wrong, and not to mention inequitable. I am calling on you to make a public statement showing that you stand with the disabled population, and your Online Campus, and hold SGA and their leadership accountable. We want SGA to be independent from Student Activities, and we want SGA's leadership to be reformed, and an Online Campus representative to be added to the Senate.
For more information and to setup a meeting, contact Andrew Dotson, our organizer. You can find his email on the UTSA directory. #SGADiscriminates"
To make a long story short, I am disabled. They refused to let me run as an officer because of a disability and nothing else, because I could not come in-person, and currently, they have not responded to my request for accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). That's not only illegal, but also, frankly, I care more about you than I care about myself. I only made my accommodation request to them recently, because I don't like admitting I'm disabled, but truth be told, I am, and that's why I'm not in-person. I didn't make the request because I'm not fighting for myself, I'm fighting for all of you. I know I could make a great leader, and there are things UTSA does, that I want a say in, and I don't want the 1700's Kingdom of Great Britain "virtual representation" to be my say. I want my say to be my voice, and my presence.
So, if you care about the disabled at all, take two minutes, send out the email template in bold, you don't even have to change anything. Just send it. If you're from UTSA, send it from your UTSA email. If you're not, well, frankly, your email may not mean much to them, but you can still do it nonetheless.
I will talk to you all soon. Peace out!
