The Issue

My name is Melissa, and I am living with amyloidosis. This rare disease affects my body's ability to function normally due to the buildup of amyloid proteins in my organs. These proteins can cause organ failure, and what makes this condition even more challenging is the lack of widespread diagnosis and monitoring tools available in the UK.

SAP (Serum Amyloid P component) scans are crucial in the early diagnosis and ongoing monitoring of amyloidosis. These scans help specialists understand the extent of amyloid protein deposits, which is essential for effective treatment and management of the disease. However, the availability of SAP scanners is severely limited due to the scarcity of specific isotopes required for these machines to function.

The UK government needs to recognize the urgency of this issue and provide adequate funding to secure these isotopes. By doing so, we can ensure SAP scans are available to every patient who needs them, improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment outcomes. With timely diagnosis, lives can be extended, and patients can have a better quality of life.

Data shows that amyloidosis is rarer than many other diseases, but it is no less devastating. According to the NHS, there are approximately 1,200 new cases of amyloidosis diagnosed in the UK each year. Despite these numbers, patients often suffer from prolonged periods of uncertainty and anxiety due to the lack of access to proper diagnostic tools.

By funding and sourcing the necessary isotopes, the UK government can lead the way in transforming patient care for those with amyloidosis. This move would not only demonstrate compassion and support for those of us grappling with this condition but would also enhance the overall healthcare system's ability to deal with rare diseases.

I urge you to join me in this fight. Help make SAP scanners more widely available by encouraging our government to take action. Your signature can push for a future where people like me have timely access to the medical care we desperately need. Please sign the petition and help bring about this crucial change.
