Require true community input before major redevelopment in San Mateo

The Issue

Growing up in San Mateo, I've cherished the vibrant community and the charm of our hometown. But over the past few years, I've witnessed drastic changes and proposed developments that threaten to erase the essence of the place I hold dear. This drive towards high-rise condominiums and rapid urbanization is not just altering the skyline but is disturbing the community fabric.

San Mateo is a place rich with history, culture, and memories for many of us. Every corner tells a story, every park holds a moment that we, as a community, have shared and cherished. The sudden push for redevelopment, however, is making us spectators in our own homes. This shouldn't be the case. Decisions that permanently alter our communities should not happen without consulting those who are most affected—us, the residents.

Major redevelopment projects in San Mateo need comprehensive community input to ensure that these changes benefit the majority and preserve our heritage. It is crucial to mandate structured hearings, send out informative mailers, and make thorough impact reports a prerequisite for any substantial redevelopment plans.

The benefits of community involvement in redevelopment are manifold. It fosters trust, ensures transparency, and most importantly, respects the voices and wishes of the people who have made San Mateo their home. Officially integrating structured community input processes provides a platform where residents can express their concerns, contribute ideas, and ultimately find a balance between necessary development and preserving what makes San Mateo unique.

However, this can only be achieved if policymakers and developers are legally required to prioritize community feedback in their projects. Simple lip service is not enough. We need concrete action and legislative measures that mandate all redevelopment projects undergo a rigorous community consultation process.

We urge local government officials and developers to listen to us, seek our perspectives, and keep the legacy of San Mateo alive. It's time that our voices shape the future of our town. Join me in demanding policies that ensure true community-driven development.

Please sign this petition to let our officials know that we stand united for a San Mateo that listens and responds to its people. Together, we can make sure that progress doesn't come at the cost of our community's soul.
