Require Streaming Platforms and Studios to Label Historical Fiction Films Before They Play
Require Streaming Platforms and Studios to Label Historical Fiction Films Before They Play
The Issue
Every year Hollywood releases films using real names, real institutions, and real documented events, then invents characters, fabricates scenes, and creates false causal explanations for real crimes and real history. They call it "based on a true story" and move on.
The result is a society that believes Alan Turing single-handedly cracked the Nazi Enigma code. That William Wallace wore blue war paint into battle. That an American submarine crew captured the Enigma machine before the US even entered World War II. That a fictional FBI agent led the Unabomber investigation.
These are not harmless embellishments. Real families have demanded apologies. Real governments have been forced to respond. Real history has been rewritten for profit and distributed globally as truth.
The fix is simple. One label. Before the film starts.
Books have used the Historical Fiction designation for decades. Commercials carry disclaimers. Pharmaceutical ads list side effects. A single label before a film that says Historical Fiction sets accurate expectations, protects audiences, and does not restrict what filmmakers can create.
We are asking Netflix, Amazon, Disney, and the Motion Picture Association to require a prominent Historical Fiction label on any film that uses real names, real institutions, or real documented events while inventing material facts.
One label. That is all it takes. Sign this petition and share it. The industry will not do this voluntarily. They benefit from the confusion. It is time audiences demanded better.
