The Issue

Living in Hibbing, MN, I watch with anxiety as cars speed down our residential streets, especially near school bus stops. My kids, as well as those of my friends, wait at these bus stops. Too often, I have witnessed close calls, vehicles whizzing by when a sudden mishap could lead to tragedy.

Our town is filled with children traveling to and from school, playing on sidewalks, and riding their bikes. It's a community where we value safety and peace of mind. Yet, uncontrolled intersections pose a constant threat to our peace. National data indicates that intersections without stop signs result in higher vehicle speeds and increased accidents, particularly endangering those who are most vulnerable—our children.

Enforcing mandatory stop signs at these uncontrolled intersections is a straightforward and effective measure. Studies have demonstrated that stop signs successfully slow down traffic, reducing the number of incidents and enhancing community safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highlights that neighborhoods which install stop signs at intersections see a marked decrease in local traffic incidents.

We need the City Council of Hibbing to take urgent action to ensure the safety of our children and community members. Installing stop signs at every uncontrolled intersection will create a safer environment, providing peace of mind for all residents when their children head off to school.

By signing this petition, you support making our roads safer for everyone and show the City Council that the residents of Hibbing are united in prioritizing our community’s safety. Let's come together to protect our children and prevent unnecessary tragedies. Sign the petition today and help us bring about a safer Hibbing for all.

As a police officer, I always take public safety seriously. In my time on the council, I have taken requests for stop signs at other intersections and assisted with getting them installed. I will take this request to the council and city administration and it will be discussed with the group. Thank you to the concerned citizens for bringing this to my attention.
