The Issue

For years, I have watched as our elected officials in Congress, who are supposed to represent us, enjoy benefits that are not available to most of their constituents. As a concerned citizen, this disparity strikes me as fundamentally unfair. Why should Congress members, who are tasked with advocating for the people of their state, benefit from a separate set of federal benefits that do not align with their promise to serve state interests? This is why I am calling for a change—Congress members should be required to use state health care and retirement benefits rather than federal ones.

Currently, members of Congress have access to comprehensive health care plans and secure federal retirement schemes that are far more generous than what most Americans can dream of. According to a report by the Congressional Research Service, health and retirement benefits for Congress are part of the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program, which provides extensive options not typically available on state-level plans. This creates a disconnect between Congress members and the public they represent, fostering an "us versus them" mentality.

Switching Congress members to the health care and retirement options of the states they represent would ensure they have a vested interest in the quality and affordability of these services. This change would encourage lawmakers to work towards improving state-level benefits, as they would share the exact same concerns and challenges as their constituents.

This proposal isn't just about fairness—it's a concrete step toward ensuring that lawmakers have true empathy and accountability towards the people they serve. If Congress members experience firsthand the same challenges we face, they would likely be much more invested in creating viable, beneficial solutions for all citizens.

Furthermore, this reform can lead to cost savings on the federal level. By removing Congressional access to federal health and retirement plans, taxpayer money can be redirected to fund infrastructure, education, and other public services desperately in need of attention.

By aligning Congressional benefits with state-level ones, we foster a deeper connection between representatives and constituents. We create a situation where elected officials genuinely understand and address the issues of their community, as they are living through the same systems and services.

It's time to ensure that those who represent us truly walk in our shoes. Let's push for legislation that mandates state health care and retirement benefits for Congress members.
